These Rheingau Rieslings from 2021 seem to come fr These Rheingau Rieslings from 2021 seem to come from two different galaxies: “Kuhweg” means “cattle track” – a wine in Germany could hardly have a less glamorous name. Schloss Johannisberg, on the other hand, has been a beacon of German wine culture for over 250 years, and the Schlossberg is a world-famous vineyard. Nevertheless, both wines are quite on the same level. Kuhweg is an old vineyard on the Rüdesheimer Berg, and Carl Erhard is one of the best local winemakers. But the Bronzelack Riesling dry from Schloss Johannisberg also impressively demonstrates that tradition is understood here as a mission for the future.

This year, the wines were finally presented. I tasted both the 2015 Felseneck and Kirchberg GG at home – and I was impressed. Perhaps the Kirchberg, with its focused, precise personality, had the edge. But in any case, it was a great decision by Prince Felix zu Salm-Salm to give his great Rieslings so much time.
Champagne Mandois is about to take a big leap forw Champagne Mandois is about to take a big leap forward: most of its vineyards are now organically farmed, and the cuverie has been transformed into an ultra-modern ‘galerie parcellaire’. Probably the best “simple” Beaujolais-Villages Probably the best “simple” Beaujolais-Villages on the market. La Centenaire from Château de Pougelon comes from a vineyard planted in 1919, and only 985 bottles (and a few magnums) were filled. Marine Descombe, currently the powerhouse in Beaujolais, is responsible for this wine. In 2024, she made it onto the French list of ‘Forbes Femmes 40’ as the first female winemaker ever. In addition to lieu-dits from classic Beaujolais crus such as Morgon, she also produces pét-nats and orange wines from Chardonnay as Vins de France. I tasted her impressive cuvées at Sur-la-pointe.com (free to read in English and German, link in the bio). 🍷

Palmes d'Or does not refer to the Cannes Film Fest Palmes d'Or does not refer to the Cannes Film Festival, but is Nicolas Feuillatte's tribute to an opera diva who played an important role in his life. Since 1985, it has been the prestige cuvée of France's best-selling champagne brand. Today, a remarkable tasting took place with Chef de Cave Guillaume Roffiaen, in which two very good Grand Cru vintage champagnes from 2015 (Blanc de Blancs and Blanc de Noirs) were followed by a tasting of the two vintages 2008 and 2009 Palmes d'Or. Maison Louis Roederer invited a small group to Rei Maison Louis Roederer invited a small group to Reims for a presentation of its current portfolio. It turned into two spectacular days in Champagne! Three tastings with a total of 24 cuvées, a tour of the cellar, a Cristal dinner at the Hôtel Werlé, the Maison's family mansion, excursions to vineyards in Verzenay and Aӱ, and a finale at the press center in Aӱ. I don't know what to highlight first: the incredible freshness of the Cristal Vinothèque 2004 in magnum, the superb balance and complexity of the 1993 vintage (also in magnum), or the exciting precision of the 2019 Blanc de Blancs, which will soon be available for purchase and is one of the best BdBs the house has ever produced. The two Camille still wines would be worth an article of its own. In any case, a big thank you to our hosts Frédéric Rouzaud, Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon, Thierry Wallaert, and Aida Dudas, as well as German importer Rudolf Knickenberg and Maria Kraus from mk-2 for the invitation! You can still find a fantastic selection of great You can still find a fantastic selection of great Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne at the top wine merchants in Paris. In personal conversations, however, the owners enjoy opening up up rarities from lesser-known regions. Changlin Xie runs Les Caves des Amis, a tiny wine shop on Rue de l'Arcade with a spectacular selection (almost exclusively French, but also including Klaus-Peter Keller from Germany). Together we tasted a 2020 Arbois Pupillin Ploussard Côte de Feule from Cellier Saint Benoit. Very pure and transparent, medium-bodied, fresh and with silky tannins, very nice to drink on its own. Unfortunately, there are only 1,500 bottles of it. Thank you for the generous gesture!🍷

Even in France, there is border viticulture. Egate Even in France, there is border viticulture. Egategeia is a project by oenologist Emmanuel Poirmeur on the Basque Coast. The grapes grow on 2 hectares within sight of the Atlantic Ocean, in the Corniche Basque in Urrugne near Saint-Jean de Luz at an altitude of about 100 meters. In the white Cuvée Dena Dela (Colombard and Ugni Blanc), 70 percent is fermented classically, while the rest ferments underwater at Saint-Jean-de-Luz for at least 4 months. The result has only 11% alcohol, light fermentation carbon dioxide, and beautiful citrus aromas. A lovely aperitif for hot days. 🥂

Peïo Errecart from Domaine Abotia blends 20% Petit Courbu, 30% Petit Manseng, and 50% Gros Manseng in his white wine and ages the wine partly in neutral barriques. It goes wonderfully with Jambon de Bayonne, a well-aged Ossau-Iraty sheep's cheese, and especially with “ventrèche”, or tuna belly, in this case hand-caught and cut up before my eyes in the magnificent market hall of Saint-Jean-de-Luz. 🥂

The Rheingau region is synonymous with classic Rhe The Rheingau region is synonymous with classic Rheingau Rieslings, yet in recent years it has lost many wineries with a glorious tradition. One example is G. H. von Mumm, which was founded by Frankfurt wine merchant Gottlieb Mumm after he made a fortune with the legendary 1811 vintage from Schloss Johannisburg. He invested his profits in the Rheingau and Champagne regions... In 2012, the winery became a member of the VDP, but six years later, the premises were sold and in Schloss Johannisberg incorporated. Today, it is a kind of ‘ghost winery’ with a website but, if I understand correctly, apart from one or two non-vintage bottlings, which are mainly sold abroad, it has no wines. Harvested two hundred years after the start of the Rheingau adventure, this 2011 TBA from Johannisberger Schwarzenstein had everything a TBA needs: dense, creamy texture, unusually stable acidity for the vintage and a seemingly endless finish. A wonderful plea for the highest designation ("Prädikat") in German viticulture, but unfortunately also a painful reminder of a winery that helped make the Rheingau great, but now lives on only in memory.

Diel's Prestige Cuvée Mo bears the designation VD Diel's Prestige Cuvée Mo bears the designation VDP.Sekt.Prestige, which means that it is a top-quality sparkling wine from a member of the Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter (VDP). The sparkling wine was aged on the lees for over nine years and bottled without dosage. The cuvée of Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc is unusual – I previously thought that Pinot Blanc was too soft and fruity to produce top sparkling wines. But 2013 was a cool year and Caroline Diel is a great winemaker. Accordingly, the Mo is dense, vinous, and complex, with a nice saltiness in the long finish. 🥂

Erick de Sousa couldn't have chosen a more fitting name for his top cuvées. This non-vintage Blanc de Blancs Champagne from Avize certainly has plenty of it. Chardonnay from old vines, with 15 percent new oak. On the nose, mirabelle plums, brioche, and a touch of well-integrated oak—on the palate, the enormously creamy texture is particularly impressive. Between the poles of power and finesse, the wine is firmly on the side of the former, but very skillfully so. 🥂

A great Sicilian classic for summer: Marsala Vergi A great Sicilian classic for summer: Marsala Vergine Riserva 2004 from Containe Florio. The Grillo grapes were fermented in cement and then aged in wood for 18 years, 143 meters from the sea, during which time 33 percent evaporated.
