I must admit that, apart from champagne, great whi I must admit that, apart from champagne, great white Burgundies are right up my alley! Last week, I really hit the jackpot. The parcel Clos des Perrieres is the heart of the undisputed best vineyard in Meursault and is solely owned by Domaine Albert Grivault. 2010 was not only a spectacular year for Chardonnay in Burgundy – it was also a moment of glory for the winery, not least in terms of critical acclaim. Expectations were high – and they were fully met. Timeless in traditional style, i.e. not very reductive, but with noticeable oak, creamy, powerful and complex, with the bright acidity of the vintage. Will keep for decades with proper storage, but unfortunately this was my only bottle. 🚿

A Blanc de Blancs from the Grand Cru Verzy in the Montagne de Reims: unusual and impressive. I first met the producer at Wine Paris and was very pleased. There will be a detailed feature about Penet Chardonnay on Sur-la-pointe in May. The focus will be on the magnificent Cuvées Parcellaires. Happy Easter! 🐣🥂

It is always a great pleasure to have Veuve Clicqu It is always a great pleasure to have Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame Rosé in the glass, last night with the very powerful 2012 vintage. For the first time, I was able to taste the Clos Colin, named after the parcel of the same name in Bouzy, which is one of the oldest of the Maison. There are 750 bottles of this, and it was only available in a package with the Grande Dame Rosé. I don't even want to know how many bottles are still available here in Germany. Anyway: the red Coteaux Champenois made from 100 per cent Pinot Noir was spectacularly good, sinewy, powerful and still full of youthfulness. At the level of excellent red Burgundies! 🍾🥂

Elvio Cogno from La Morra has been making very tra Elvio Cogno from La Morra has been making very traditional Barolo since 1964. The 1979 was fully developed, already somewhat overripe on the nose: animal-herbal, leather, rosehip and, unfortunately, lovage. Bright cherry-red color with subtle brick-red reflections. Intact structure with high acidity but crumbly tannins. 🍷

Last week, Havana Club introduced his Icónica Col Last week, Havana Club introduced his Icónica Collection of Cuban High-end rums to Germany. Abel Morales, one of only nine Maestro Del Ron Cubano from the Caribbean island, had come to Munich especially for the event. Fortunately, I was invited to an evening for important collectors, and so in addition to the presentation of Havana Club Selección de Maestros, Gran Reserva Añejo 15 Años and the outstanding Máximo Extra Añejo, which is limited to just 1,000 bottles, there were also the rare special bottlings Don Navarro and Tributo 2025 to taste. Finally, Asbel Morales presented the single cask series (10 years, 17 years and 21 years) as a world premiere in the spectacular Villa Blofeld, giving a deep insight into the diversity of rum production in Cuba. A detailed article will follow shortly on sur-la-pointe.com

ProWein 2025 was an astonishing event: significant ProWein 2025 was an astonishing event: significantly fewer stands compared to the previous year (-28%), again fewer visitors (-11%). But a very high quality of conversations and tastings. One highlight, for example, was the presentation of the champagnes of Maison Mandois by Chef de cave Maximilien de Billy. He is none other than the son of Hubert de Billy from the family that owns Champagne Pol Roger. I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot more about him and his champagnes. The second Pinot event on great German wines made The second Pinot event on great German wines made from grape varieties of the Pinot family took place this week at the 2-star restaurant Votum in Hanover. Assmannshäuser Höllenberg Pinot Noir GG 2022 from Weingut Krone was perhaps the greatest wine among the reds. But the wine is not yet on sale and is only at the embryonic stage, so to speak. In contrast, the Pinot Noir Reiterpfad an den Achtmorgen 2018 from Weingut Winning was the best in the sophisticated pairing by chef Benjamin Gallein (pictured: Amazake | fish sauce | Gunaja chocolate). Among the whites, there were impressive Chardonnays and Pinot Gris from Schloss Ortenberg and Weingut Frank Keller. 🍷

Les Hauts Partas is the exception in the portfolio Les Hauts Partas is the exception in the portfolio of Champagne Roger Coulon. The 0.2-hectare parcel is planted with Chardonnay and belongs to Chouilly on the Côte des Blancs and was acquired by the family at a favorable opportunity in 2012. Today, the 1,900 bottles are the only Grand Crus champagnes produced by the Maison from Vrigny. You can find out more about Roger Coulon and a tasting of the portfolio in a portrait that has just gone online on sur-la-pointe in German and English. 🥂

Côte-Rôtie La Landonne 2007 from René Rostaing Côte-Rôtie La Landonne 2007 from René Rostaing showed itself quite spectacularly last week. With a wild (in the best sense of the word), complex bouquet, a lot of power and density on the palate and still youthful, untamed tannins. If you want to drink it now, you should definitely decant it. 🍷

Clos Stegasta Asyrtiko from the T-Oinos winery on Clos Stegasta Asyrtiko from the T-Oinos winery on the Cycladic island of Tinos has made a lot of headlines, and not just in Germany. While some the best Assyrtikos from Santorini are increasingly being trimmed in the direction of “great Mediterranean wine” through exaggerated ageing in wood etc., this wine is actually very convincing stylistically. Complex, salty, with a very nice texture. But unfortunately rather exorbitant in price.

In addition to a whole series of outstanding Rieslings and Pinot Noirs, a Chardonnay presented by Philipp Wittmann from Rheinhessen was also very noteworthy: Westhofener Steingrube Erstes Gewächs from 2022, which has recently become the winery's top Chardonnay. There are still not too many really stylistically outstanding Chardonnays from Germany, but why shouldn't that change?

Intense work on the portrait of Champagne Roger Co Intense work on the portrait of Champagne Roger Coulon ... The Maison from Vrigny is the tenth episode of my bilingual Champagne portraits on sur-la-pointe, the sequel to my big Champagne book published by Tre Torri. Granit H Pinot Blanc 2019 is the first vintage fro Granit H Pinot Blanc 2019 is the first vintage from Griesel & Compagnie's Auerbacher Höllberg vineyard. Very creamy and vinous, yet elegant, with a perlage that becomes tired a little too early. Good complexity, but with somewhat low acidity due to the grape variety. A sparkling wine that is certainly in the upper echelons of the new German sparkling wines, even if I think the sometimes very high scores from colleagues are rather exaggerated. 🥂

Wine Paris, I have to admit, was pretty spectacula Wine Paris, I have to admit, was pretty spectacular. Not only because of Paris itself, the three-storey exhibition hall 7 for France and the fantastic wines. But above all because of the people you could meet here. In just over half an hour, I spoke to Frédéric Drouhin about price trends in Burgundy, congratulated Pol-Roger owner Hubert de Billy on his Winston Churchill 2002 Vinothèque and was introduced to the wines of Lucien La Moine by Rotem and Mounir Saouma. I particularly enjoyed meeting Kathryn Green, the new co-owner of Grace Family Wines. The legendary cult winery from Napa Valley produces just 300 cases of its Grand Vin. In 2017, I was able to visit it for FINE - The Wine Magazine and wrote one of my most unusual stories about founder Dick Grace. Now I'm looking with great anticipation to the new chapter on Grace.
Two articles about my top 10 champagnes and top 10 still wines will soon be available on Sur-la-pointe.com. 🍷
